Digital Metering Program
We're carrying out a pilot program to test the use of digital water meters to help us better identify leaks in our water network.
Digital water meters are an emerging technology in Australia with the potential to add intelligence to network management, improve customer engagement and reduce total water demand by enhanced detection of non-revenue water and customer water leakage. Digital meters have the potential to:
- provide direct benefits to our customers such as early leak detection, which can avoid bill shock and wasted water.
- help us to identify water leaks in our network earlier, reducing outages and avoiding potential damage from infrastructure failure.
About the pilot program
The pilot program will run over 2 years and will be delivered in multiple stages. Installation of digital meters will be carried out from January 2025, beginning with a trial of around 300 digital meters to be installed at selected homes in Cameron Park.
Our approved meter maintenance partner, Service Stream, will be installing the digital meters and participating customers will be notified ahead of time. Installation will take around 30 minutes and it is likely customers may experience no water or low water pressure at the property during this time
Digital meters will record water usage and securely transmit this data back to us once per day. Other data related to the meter itself such as battery status, signal strength & tamper alarms are also transmitted back to us once per day.
The data from digital meters will be used internally by Hunter Water to detect leaks and monitor usage, at this stage customers will not have access to this digital data (through use of an app) like you would when using a digital electricity meter.
