Cessnock Wastewater Treatment Works upgrade

We’re upgrading Cessnock Wastewater Treatment Works to provide for future growth in the area and improve the quality of the treated effluent discharged from the site.

Fast facts

Location: Government Road, Cessnock

Project Duration: Late 2021- late 2023

Background

This treatment works was originally built in 1932 and was typical of facilities of the time, with similar plants installed at Morpeth, Shortland and Kurri Kurri.

The works currently service 32,000 people in the areas of Cessnock, Aberdare, Bellbird and Nulkaba.

Community benefits

The upgrade of the Cessnock Wastewater Treatment Works will update treatment processes and the overall treated wastewater quality will improve. It will also meet new limits set by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and ensure the plant caters for population growth.

All efforts are being made to minimise inconvenience to the community during construction. There may be some temporary changes to traffic and some increase in noise and dust in the local area whilst the work is been carried out.

Our lead contractor for this project is Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.
