Thornton Wastewater Diversion

Overview

As part of a wider upgrade of the Morpeth Wastewater Transportation System, Hunter Water is making improvements to the wastewater (sewerage) service in the Beresfield and Thornton areas to accommodate population growth and address system performance.

Wastewater from Beresfield and Thornton is treated at Morpeth Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW). Wastewater from Beresfield has previously been pumped to Morpeth via a pumping station near Metford train station.

From January 2015, wastewater from Beresfield will be pumped to Morpeth via a pumping station located in bushland north of John Arthur Ave in Thornton.

Why are the changes occurring?

A growing local population means that wastewater flows to the Beresfield pumping station are increasing, however storage is limited at the pumping station. In recent years, the Beresfield pumping station has overflowed and caused sewage to impact the environment. Diverting wastewater from Beresfield to Thornton will help prevent sewage overflows occurring in the future.

At the same time, the Waterford County subdivision is currently under construction. From 2 January 2015, the developer needs to access the land where Hunter Water's existing wastewater pipeline is located in order to continue with construction. Hunter Water will no longer be able to use this pipeline, which pumps wastewater to Beresfield pumping station.

Will residents be impacted by the changes?

There will be no interruption to the sewerage service.

The pipeline which will carry wastewater from Beresfield to Thornton was constructed in 2011 and has already been used on multiple occasions between 2011 and 2014.

When will the changes occur?

Final sealing of the pipeline in Thornton is currently being completed. From 29 December 2014 wastewater flows will begin to be diverted to the Thornton pumping station from Beresfield.
