Cessnock Water Supply Upgrade
In 2006/2007 the Department of Planning’s Lower Hunter Regional Strategy projected additional growth (an increase of 21,000 lots by 2031) around Cessnock. As a result of this significant growth, Hunter Water updated its servicing strategy for the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock area to address:
- Projected growth and demand
- Security of supply – in line with the anticipated growth
- Low pressure issues some residents experience in peak demand periods
- A planned re-zoning of land from Singleton Shire Council into Hunter Water's area of operations
- Integration of the existing Maitland and North Rothbury water supply systems with the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock system
Hunter Water is embarking on a four-stage upgrade of the water supply system within the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock area from 2009-2020.
Stage 1 will be delivered in two parts:
Stage 1(a) - Construction currently underway
- New water mains within Weston, Abermain and Cessnock
- Construction is expected to be completed by September
- Contract has been awarded to Delcare Constructions Pty Ltd
Stage 1(b)
- Additional water main upgrades to increase flow capacity
- A new reservoir to service the area west of Cessnock
- A new water pump station to supply the new reservoir
- New water mains to supply water to the reservoir
- Construction is planned to be completed by 2013
Consulting with the Community
As part of the Hunter Water’s consultation process, a Community Working Group has been established, specifically to help determine the preferred site for the proposed reservoir planned in stage 1(b).
Minutes and outcomes from the Community Working Group will be regularly updated on the Hunter Water website.
